Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose to €270 million (Dh1.17 billion) from €217m a year earlier, Ferrari said on Wednesday, beating the average €262m estimate of six analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

The closest vehicle that Ferrari has to a crossover or SUV is the GTC4Lusso, which is a shooting-brake coupe. He stressed that someone will "have to shoot (him) first" if Ferrari's first SUV competes against the likes of Porsche, before making one very important final point: The automaker's board has yet to officially decide on whether it will be building any kind of sports utility vehicle as part of its new five-year plan.

Ferrari has been holding it off for as long as it can but now it seems the storied Italian marque is considering a utility vehicle set to take the shape of the ever-popular crossover and SUV markets.

The 812 Superfast, Ferrari's most powerful model to date that has yet to arrive on the market, already has a waiting list beyond 2018, the company said. Currently, the only four-seat vehicle offered by Ferrari is the GTC4 Lusso, which is a two-door shooting brake.

The big Ferrari would be targeted at Asian customers, particularly in China, and may alone contribute 2,000 vehicles to annual deliveries, the people said.

Ferrari was spun off from FCA's portfolio of brands in 2015, which means it's technically not an FCA brand as Marchionne alluded to with its potential Formula E entrance.

Marchionne is hoping to boost Ferrari's profit margins and sell up to 10,000 cars a year. Pushing beyond the 10,000 auto limit would mean it would lost its "small vehicle manufacturer" status, which protects it from some USA and European fuel-use and emissions rules. Given that more stringent environmental regulations would occur under the new plan, Ferrari also plans to add more hybrid models in their lineups.

"Whatever it is, it will be of the same caliber as anything else we've done". The carmaker's executives have had meetings with investors in the past weeks to prepare them for the new strategy, the people said.
